I Won a Contest!

02/15/2021

Every New Year's Day since 2019, I have scrambled to get a story together to submit to the North Carolina Writers' Network's Jacobs/Jones African American Literary Prize. The deadline is always January 2nd and I've always wanted to win, not only because of the $1000 prize, but also because I've wanted to claim a space in this storied community of writers within my home state in order to have more visibility and networking opportunities.

This year I won! My story "Fifteens" is another basketball story but, this time, told from the perspective of a family with one generation of failed hoop dreams that is keeping the other from accomplishing hoop dreams of their own.

I promise that one day you all will read an update concerning a story that is not about basketball. That day is not today.

Happy new year!
